Are You Thinking About Buying Carpet?

A Brief Overview of Carpet

Choosing the right carpet for your house can be a huge decision that you will notice and walk on for years. With so many styles and types to choose from, it can be overwhelming for a lot of people. Here is a brief overview of your options:

Fibers

While there is a wide variety of different carpet fibers out there, the vast majority of carpet is made out of nylon, polyester, polypropylene (olefin), triexta, or wool. All of these fibers have different characteristics that change its durability, stain resistance, cost, and more. The most popular and widely used fiber is nylon. With so many different characteristics to take into account, we will help you choose the right carpet fiber for your needs.

Styles

When carpet is made, the fibers are looped through a backing material. The fibers are then either left in uncut loops or cut in a variety of styles:

Loop Pile or Berber – The carpet fibers are left in an uncut and uniform pattern that makes it extremely durable, great for high traffic areas or commercial offices. Loops can also be at varying heights to create patterns in the carpet. Loop pile is not very good for pets, however, because their nails can get stuck in the loops and fray the carpet.

Cut PileThe carpet fibers are cut at a uniform height. This is the most popular carpet style, and it is good for a wide range of uses. There are several different styles including saxony, frieze, plush, and textured plush. Cut pile usually feels softer than loop carpet, but its durability depends on how twisted the fibers are. The tighter the twist, the better it will be at hiding wear and tear and the more durable it will be.

Cut and Loop Pile – Cut and loop pile carpet have some of the carpet fibers cut, and some are left in loops. This creates a very textured carpet that can be formed into a variety of patterns which is great to create a more visually interesting flooring. Cut and loop pile tends to show wear more than cut or loop, however.

Carpet buying can be an overwhelming prospect, but a good place to start in your search is to understand the different options that are available to you. Here at Carpet Depot, we want to help you choose the carpet that best suits your needs.
